Back to School, Back to the Cold Season – Be Prepared!

How to Stock Your Medicine Cabinet with Immunity Boosters for Children and Adults!

As the school year begins, children look forward to reconnecting with their friends, new adventures, and lets be honest…recess! While, the parents look forward to the educational growth and development, they do worry about all those germs, colds, sick days, and the worst—- the big, bad Flu! As we stock up on new school supplies to fill up those cool new backpacks, we must also stock up the medicine cabinet with Immunity boosters. These various herbal remedies can help prevent the nasty colds, or at least shorten their duration. But, before we even get into the herbals and medications, we must drill our children and ourselves to wash our hands frequently!

The best prevention of spreading germs is to wash your hands with soap and warm water, also use antibacterial sanitizers when on the go.  There are very convenient, portable hand sanitizers which attach like a key chain to a school backpack, I highly recommend to get these for your children.  Avoid crowded areas in the winter time.  Most people believe that cold weather causes us to get sick….this is a myth.  In reality, cold weather causes crowding of people indoors, which makes it easier to spread germs.  ( example: schools… children spend a whole day in a small area with other children, they can rapidly pass germs from one to another).  A germ/ virus has to be present to get one sick with a cold or flu, cold weather alone will not get a person sick. Having said that, it is important to stay warm and dry, so that you don’ t exacerbate the symptoms. (1)

What are some herbals and supplements I should stock up on and /or give my children to boost immunity?
1. Vitamin C
2. Hibiscus/ Rose Hips (dried berries)
3. Omega -3 Fish Oil
4. Echinacea
5. Manuka Honey
6. Sambucus Syrup

Of the above listed products, my favorite to recommend is Sambucus!  Not only does it taste great and works well, it has become a very popular herbal product! Medical doctors in our community are well aware of Sambucus, and advise their patients regularly to take it for Immunity!  Sambucus is a natural syrup composed of Elderberry. There is a wide variety in the Sambucus product line, made by the highly reputable herbal company Nature’s Way. There is a special formulation of syrup for children 2 years and older, it includes Elderberry, Echinacea, and Propolis. All three are great agents to help our bodies fight colds.  Caution for children who are allergic to bees, since Propolis is a bee product, it should be avoided in individuals allergic to bees and honey! For Adults, Sambucus also comes in very convenient, absolutely delicious, sweet and sour, chewable candy form. This year, at Kedvon, we expanded our Sambucus product line to also include the all Organic Sambucus and the Sugar-Free Sambucus, appropriate for patients with diabetes. Also, Sambucus syrup is Gluten Free and Kosher, which is an added bonus for patients with those specific dietary restrictions.
What about the Flu Shot for Immunity Boost?

Getting the flu vaccine is a controversial topic. the flu shot is composed of multiple viral strains that were prevalent in previous flu seasons, hence in the current season there maybe entirely new or mutated strains. Getting a flu shot does not guarantee you will not get the flu. If you do get the big, bad flue, there are non-prescription products can help at the first symptoms of cold or a virus (possibly prevent virus from progressing within the first 48 hours)?

1. Vira Clear
2. Anaferon
3. Occilococcum

Also, if you do get sick, treat individual symptoms with medicines which are specific for each of the following: fever, cough, runny nose, stuffy nose, sore throat. Or you can choose a medication which treats a combination of your symptoms, for example: Theraflu, Tylenol Cold, DayQuil or NyQuil, or the herbal Umcka.  If your physician prescribes you a medication, make sure to follow all directions. If the cause of the respiratory illness is bacteria, your doctor most likely will prescribe an antibiotic.  A common one we see is Z-Pak / Azithromycin. If you are on an antibiotic, tell the pharmacist your allergies, to prevent emergencies. Also, make sure to finish your full course of treatment. This will allow to kill off the bacteria completely.  Store the antibiotics as directed, taking them with food can prevent stomach issues.  If your doctor suspects the cause of illness to be vira,l such as Influeza ( the Flu), he or she may tell you to treat the symptoms with over the counter medications and drink plenty of fluids, to help wash the virus out of your body. Sometimes doctors may prescribe Tamiflu, which can treat the flu, but is only prooven to be effective if taken within the first 48 hours of onset of symptoms. (2)
