Choosing the Best Sunblock

Sumer is finally here!  Let’s get outdoors and have fun! It’s beach time! We’re ready to have fun, but it’s important to protect our skin from the sun and the harmful UV rays.  Finding the perfect sunblock is important for adults and children alike!  Especially, that the kids spend a lot of time outside in summer camp.
As a parent, one finds themselves standing in the lotion isle of a pharmacy, searching for that perfect sun block for his/ her kids. Thinking….I’m going to get the best one. But what what makes a sunblock the best? Most people assume that the higher the SPF, the better, while others believe that expensive ones are superior, or that specific brand products are the best. (1) Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however there are certain myths and important factors which truly matter, lets discuss them so that you can really make the most optimal choice in sunblock for your children!
The Most Important Factors in Choosing Sun Protection Product:
1. Provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. These products usually include one or more of these ingredients:
Benzophenones (Oxybenzone, Dioxybenzone, Sulisobenzone)
Menthyl anthranilate, also known as Meradimate
Mexoryl SX, also known as Ecamsule
Titanium Dioxide
Zinc Oxide
2. Contains an SPF of at least 15 to 30. Here is and important point, the SPF can be higher, but it does not mean that it will protect better! For example an SPF 30 product can protect from 97 percent of the negative UV rays, while an SPF 50 product can protect from 98 percent….so the difference is not significant.
3. Water-resistant. Don’t think water resistant is only for swimming! When your kids are outside in the heat, they will sweat, so water resistant may provide better protection.
4. Hypoallergenic and fragrance free – ” especially if your child has sensitive skin.
is in a form that is easy to use on your child, whether that means it is a stick, gel, lotion, spray, or continuous spray, etc.” (1).
5. Kid-friendly – Babies and children have sensitive skin, which can be easily irritated by chemicals in adult sunscreens, so don’t use products with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and benzephenones like dioxybenzone, oxybenzone, or sulisobenzone. “Children’s sunscreens use ingredients less likely to irritate the skin, like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Unlike chemical ingredients, these protect babies’ skin without being absorbed.” (2)
“For kids 6 months or older, look for a sunscreen designed for children with an SPF of 15 or higher. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies under 6 months be kept out of the sun altogether.”(2)
As far as price is concerned, I was shocked to find out that more expensive products are not necessarily better, it all involves testing for ingredients and their effectiveness. To be an educated consumer, check out rating and reports, don’t consider a brand great just because it is popular.
