Issue#134

Julie Smolyansky (CEO, Lifeway Foods, Inc.) introduced me to Bianna Golodryga a few months back and, when we talked, I knew right away there’s a great cover story to be made. Bianna was born in Moldova to a working class Jewish family. In 1980 her family moved to Houston, Texas with just a couple hundred bucks to their names. After graduating The University of Texas at Austin, with a degree in Russian, East European & Eurasian studies and a minor in economics, Bianna found her way to television. She began her career as a producer at CNBC before becoming an on-air correspondent there. Prior to CNBC, she worked in the financial services industry. In 2004 Golodryga was named one of the top journalists under the age of 30. She was a correspondent for ABC between 2007 and 2010 and was named co-anchor of the weekend edition of Good Morning America in May 2010. In April 2013 Golodryga was the first person to interview Anzor Tsarnaev, the father of ‘Boston Bomber’ Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Bianna is fluent in Russian, although she was just a baby, when her family immigrated to United States. I’m glad we were able to do this cover story and thank you, Bianna, for taking the time to work with us.

Traditionally, I want to announce a few events coming up in Chicago as we’ve just added them on bomond.com. Pavel Volya will drop his Big Stand Up show at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts, Valery Meladze will make you sing and cry at Evanston Auditorium, Comedy Women will make us laugh real hard, Ani Lorak will perform for the first time in Chicago, Tina Karol is coming back, and, of course, Leningrad and Sergey Shnurov will be at Concord Music Hall in just a few weeks. What a lineup! You know, where to get the tickets! Thank you all, who came to Potap and Nastya concert over the weekend – what a great time!

I’d also like to welcome Anna Lyudkovskaya to our contributing writers staff. Anna is a well-known journalist and food critic, video blogger and author of a cool recipe book. Actually, she’s done so much stuff, that this page alone would not be enough to list it all. I’m very excited about our collaboration in Russian Chicago magazine and looking forward to working with her more.

As always, this new issue is filled with interesting articles and, I sure hope, you’ll enjoy reading all of it. Talk soon and cheers!
