Let’s Get Herbal! The Super Seven Herbals for Our Health Benefits!

Herbal remedies definitely have a place in healthcare!  Herbs have been used for centuries to treat and prevent ailments.  Herbs can help with a wide variety of health problems, such as pain, elevated blood sugar and cholesterol, detoxifying the liver, and possibly even killing cancer cells.  The benefit of using herbals, is that there maybe fewer side effects than with chemically made medication.  However, there is a time and place for all types of treatments in medicine.  At times, prescription medication is needed, and at other times, one may try an herbal first, before getting a prescription.  Consult with professionals about your specific situation.  Also, pay attention to the quality of the the herbals that you purchase.  Herbals are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but high quality companies follow very strict guidelines in ingredient quality and product contamination.  A few examples of herbal companies with advanced laboratories, scientists, experts, and high quality products are Now Vitamins and Natures Way!  Kedvon Pharmacy carries both of these lines to provide our patients with the best products on the market.  Tablets and capsule forms of herbals are convenient in today’s lifestyle, but we also carry dry herbs to make teas and concoctions at home.  In the United States, herbals are gaining more and more popularity!  Lets say one wants to try using plants for healing, but doesn’t know where to begin or which herbs have the superpowers??  Worry no more, lets go through the garden together and look at super seven herbals with health powers!
1. Turmeric:  Arthritis Pain

It is a spice used in curry, contains curcumin, helps to decrease inflammation.

Suggested dose: 400 mg of curcumin extract three times daily

2. Cinnamon: Lower Blood Sugar:

This may be a good option for patients who have slightly elevated sugar.

Standard recommendation is 1 gram of cinnamon capsules per day.

3. Rosemary: Avoid carcinogens

“Frying, broiling, or grilling meats at high temperatures creates HCAs (heterocyclic amines), potent carcinogens implicated in several cancers. But HCA levels are significantly reduced when rosemary extract (a common powder) is mixed into beef before cooking, say Kansas State University researchers. “Rosemary contains carnosol and rosemarinic acid, two powerful antioxidants that destroy the HCAs,” explains lead researcher J. Scott Smith, PhD.”

Rosemary extract helps prevent carcinogens that enter the body from binding with DNA, the first step in tumor formation, hence it may help prevent tumors.

4. Ginger: Avert Nausea
Ginger can prevent stomach upset from many sources, including pregnancy, motion sickness, and chemotherapy.
A dose 500 mg of ginger every 4 hours can be helpful, maximum amount for the day is 4 grams.

5. Holy Basil: Battle Stress
May be effective at reducing stress by increasing adrenaline and noradrenaline and decreasing serotonin.
Holly Basil may also be beneficial for breast cancer

6. St. John’s Wort: Soothe your worries

To relieve mild to moderate depression and anxiety.
Take it as directed on the bottle.
Warning: St. John’s wort has been shown to interact with prescription medications, check with your pharmacist or doctor before you take it.

“High consumption of garlic lowered rates of ovarian, colorectal, and other cancers, says a research review in theAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
