The Russian – American Community supports the Bear Necessities Fundraiser at Kedvon Pharmacy!
Dear Friends of our Russian – American community, in this issue of Russian Chicago Magazine, I would like to tell you about a wonderful fundraiser that is happening at Kedvon Pharmacy. Please read and share this information with your family and friends. Kedvon Pharmacy has the honor to represent Bear Necessities in our community! Bear Necessities is a Pediatric Cancer Foundation, whose mission is to eliminate pediatric cancer and to provide hope and support to those who are touched by it! We are committed to selling Barrett Teddy Bears. They are only $20 and 100 % of the proceeds go to Bear Necessities. There is no greater honor that you can do for us, than to stop by Kedvon Pharmacy to buy a bear! In addition, to those who buy a bear, we will give you 10% OFF your entire Kedvon Pharmacy purchase!
Why is it so very important to have an organization like Bear Necessities?
Let’s take a look:
Did you know…?
– Each year, 13,500 children (ages 0-19) will be diagnosed with cancer in the U.S.
– Cancer is the #1 disease killer in children under the age of 15.
– Every 3 1⁄2 minutes, a child is diagnosed with cancer.
– 1 in every 330 Americans develops cancer before the age of 20.
– Every school day, 46 children or 2 classrooms of students will be diagnosed with cancer.
– LESS THAN 4% of all cancer research dollars are directed at pediatric cancer.
Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation is a national organization founded in 1992 and has been actively contributing to children stricken with cancer. Bear Necessities’ mission is to eliminate pediatric cancer and to provide hope and support to those who are touched by it which is implemented through its two unique programs:
Bear Hugs Program | Supports cancer patients (ages 0 –19), as well as their immediate families, that face the many challenges that accompany the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric cancer. Our outreach serves both in state and out of state children that are being treated at one of the nine major Chicago area hospitals with pediatric oncology departments. A Bear Hug is a customized experience that brightens the life of a child going through cancer. The Bear Hugs Program also provides immediate family support for financial burden and essential needs.
Bear Discoveries | Each year, medical research grants are awarded nationwide primarily to junior investigative researchers who make meaningful advancements and discoveries towards finding a cure and therapies for various types of pediatric cancer. How did we, at Kedvon Pharmacy get involved?
It’s a great story, shows how the world is connected in a full circle! My friend Yana Nirshberg introduced me to a wonderful organization called Bear Necessities, whose mission is to eliminate pediatric cancer and to provide hope and support for those who are touched by it. My motivation to get involved with Bear Necessities is due to a diagnosis a little boy received in our community last summer. We made plans and Bear Necessities sent me a big box of teddy bears to sell as a fundraiser. When I opened the box, I looked at the cute little bear, his name is Barrett. The little boy who I had in mind is named Bennett! This is a full circle…. I contacted Bennett’s mom Enna, to tell her the story. She had a story for me as well. It turns out that the same organization Bear Necessities sent Bennett a “Bear Hug” last year! This gift was a free trip to the zoo for the little guy! Here you will see pictures of Bennett at the Zoo with his parents Enna and Vitaly, on Thanksgiving weekend. They are very thankful for the zoo trip as well as our community’s support last year! I’m sharing on behalf of their family, Bennett is doing well and will even go back to daycare this month!
I want to say We need to keep wishing him well to a full recovery! Organizations like Bear Necessities help fund research and do wonderful things to support families going through this outmost difficult time. Bennett is planning to take a bear to another child who is sick! Support and take a bear as well!
So how has our Russian-American Community responded so far?
I’m so glad to say they fell in love with Barrett Bear! In the last ten days, many people have stopped by Kedvon Pharmacy in Wheeling to buy a bear! People of all ages and different walks of life have shown how important this cause is to our community! On our Kedvon Pharmacy Facebook page, we have a blog called “Kedvon Pharmacy Moment of the Week.” Usually, this is where we post something funny that happened during the week at the store…. But during this fundraiser, we made a commitment to post pictures of everyone who gets their very own Barrett Bear. To see the full story and how Barrett Bear took the Russian Community by storm, visit our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/
Our story develops further, our cause brought so much awareness to our community, that Petergof Restaurant will host a Puple Dress Soirée on Friday, March 7th, 2014 to benefit Bear Necessities. Everyone who purchases a bear, will receive a gift certificate to the restaurant. We are very excited to see our community getting involved in such a great cause!
